Underdog
We love an underdog.
In American culture, we can’t get enough of them. We root for them. We tell stories about them. We celebrate them.
But here’s the interesting part: we love underdogs . . . we just don’t want to be one.
Given the choice, most of us would rather have the advantage. A head start. Better odds.
Because that’s really what it comes down to — the odds. The longer they are, the harder it is to pull off the win.
And the biggest underdog fight most people are in right now has absurdly long odds.
It’s the fight with the present moment.
We argue with what’s happening. We replay what already happened. We fast-forward to what might happen. It’s like we believe there’s some kind of magic mirror in the mind where we can turn lead into gold . . . or fat into muscle . . . or this moment into a different one.
But lead is lead. Fat is fat. And this moment? It’s this moment.
It’s not yesterday. It’s not five minutes from now.
And when we fight that reality, we don’t improve our odds — we make them worse. We step into a ring where we can't win.
At some point, somebody has to throw in the towel.
Because if they don’t, we just keep taking punches from reality. And reality never gets tired.
Here’s the quieter truth: there is a more peaceful way to live – Give up the fight.
Not give up on life. Not give up on effort. Just give up fighting what already is.
That’s where presence of mind comes in. Think of it as the voice in your corner. It sees you’re battered. It knows you can’t win this round. And it’s willing to toss the towel — if you let it.
We all have that presence of mind. The question is whether we trust it enough to act.
This moment is the only one you actually own. The past? Sold and gone. The future? On layaway.
Right now is what’s in your hands.
When you accept what’s here — even if you don’t like it — something interesting happens. Your vision clears. Options appear. The fight stops draining you.
You can’t turn this moment into the next one by resisting it. In fact, the more you resist it, the longer it seems to last.
Acceptance is what moves things along.
Deal with what’s in front of you, and it naturally clears space for what’s next.
So have the presence of mind to stop swinging at reality. Stop treating it like the opponent. It might actually be the ally.
The present moment can feel like a foe. But that’s usually because we’re fighting it.
And eventually you have to ask yourself: how bruised do I need to get before I try something different?
And just to be clear — for the feisty among us — throwing in the towel doesn’t mean surrendering your ambition, your drive, or your goals.
It just means surrendering to reality.
And that’s the fastest way I know to move from underdog . . . to the winner's circle.
All the best,
John
