Notice What You Don’t Notice
Here’s something I’ve been curious about.
Most people think they know who we are. And honestly? A lot of what they’re seeing is just our conditioning. The habits we picked up. The way we react. The way we speak. The way we move through the world.
But that’s not the whole picture.
We’re more than our conditioning.
So here’s a question: Who were you before all that?
Before you learned how to respond. Before you picked up habits. Before you started imitating what everyone around you was doing.
There was a “before.”And there can be an “after.”But only if you start noticing.
Take something simple — like your accent.
You might say, “I don’t have an accent.” Oh yes you do. Everybody does.
You just don’t hear it because it feels normal. You grew up around people who talked that way, so you talk that way. It’s automatic. Second nature. Which really just means . . . unnoticed.
And that’s how most of our lives run – on automatic pilot – unnoticed.
Some of it’s great. Some of it? Not so great.
So how do you change anything? You start by noticing the automatic stuff.
Start noticing your automatic behaviors. Do you talk more than listen? Grab your phone the moment you wake up? Offer unsolicited advice? The list is endless. And when you notice something that’s getting in your way, interrupt it.
That act of interruption is the passport to the whole picture of you.
Interruptions are powerful. Because in between a thought and an action . . . there’s a space. It’s tiny. But it’s there.
And that space? That’s where reconditioning lives.
You don’t have to start with the big, dramatic stuff. Start small. Notice little habits. The way you sit. The way you react. The tone you use.
The more you notice, the more you notice.
And eventually you start seeing patterns you didn’t even realize were running the show.
Some of those patterns are working for you. Keep them. Others? They’re holding you back. Interrupt them.
There’s an old phrase from ancient Greece — “Know thyself.” It was carved at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi and echoed later by philosophers like Socrates and Plato.
Today, we might say it a little differently: Notice thyself.
Pay attention to you. Not obsessively. Not critically. Just honestly. Because when you start noticing, your conditioning can’t hide anymore.
And that’s when you get access to the rest of who you are.
All the best,
John
