How Deep Can You Go?
Many years ago, The Grasshopper handed me this little gem:
“May you never be able to measure the height of your depth.”
Isn’t that great?
It sounded so . . . pithy.
(And be honest — doesn’t the word pithy sound like you’ve suddenly developed a slight lisp?)
Anyway.
As clever as it sounded, I had to sit with it for a while. I mean . . . what does that actually mean? “The height of your depth”? That’s a phrase that makes your brain tilt its head a little.
Here’s what eventually popped for me:
You can never have too much depth.
Depth is like infinity. It doesn’t have an edge. There’s no finish line. No “Congratulations, you’ve reached maximum depth.”
So the real question becomes — how do you go deep?
Well . . . first, you’ve got to get out of the shallow end of your mind.
You know that place. Where thoughts splash around, making noise but not going anywhere. You can only go waist-deep there. Maybe chest-deep on a good day.
If you want depth, you’ve got to step out of all that mental chatter.
Ironically, getting out of your head is the pathway to depth.
And once you stop trying to manage the entire universe with your thoughts — which, by the way, has never once worked — there’s no telling how deep you can go.
Depth does something beautiful.
It bathes you. It restores you. Not just mentally, but physically. You come back different. Softer. Clearer. Better.
That’s what restorative really means. You return feeling like you’ve been somewhere . . . even though you never left.
And the good news? There are countless ways to go deep.
Quiet walks. Meditation. Music. Prayer. Staring at the ocean. Staring at nothing.
Explore the options. Find the one that takes you beyond the measuring stick. And then make it part of your daily travel plans.
Because that — truly — is the height of relaxation and rejuvination.
All the best,
John
