Person of Substance
Ya know what . . . I love acronyms. They’re efficient. Clean. Memorable.
Take P.O.S. as an example.
Now, depending on who you’re talking about, that can stand for two very different things.
P.O.S. can mean Person of Substance.
Or . . . it can mean something less flattering
Big difference.
A Person of Substance? If they tell you they’ve got your back, they’ve got your back. No smoke. No drama. No disappearing act when things get inconvenient.
The other P.O.S.? Oh, they’ve got your back too — right up until it benefits them not to. They’ll blow sunshine up your keister all day long . . . until the wind shifts. Then suddenly, you’re expendable.
And here’s where it gets entertaining.
When two of those turncoat P.O.S.-ers team up? Oh, grab popcorn. Because the minute the heat gets turned up, you can set your watch by it — they’ll start ratting each other out like it’s an Olympic sport.
Which brings to mind a couple of old sayings.
“If you lie down with dogs, you’ll get fleas.”
“Birds of a feather…”
You don’t have to look too far for examples. Mob underlings flipping on the boss the second a long prison term is on the table. That’s one P.O.S. turning on another. Self-preservation beats loyalty every time in that crowd.
And here’s the uncomfortable part.
If you surround yourself with suspect people, guess what? You become suspect too. Fair or not, that’s how it works. You don’t get to swim in muddy water and come out sparkling.
These non-substance P.O.S.-ers? They’re transactional. Loyal to no one. Everything’s a deal. Everything’s leverage. Everything is about what serves them right now.
So the question’s simple.
Who do you want your name next to?
A Person of Substance?
Or someone who’s proven — repeatedly — they’re just a Piece of Shit?
Your call.
All the best,
John
