A Small Shift That Changes Everything

You know that loaded question: “You didn’t know that? ”It can make anyone feel about two inches tall.

My dad was a pro at it. I would admit I didn’t know something he was talking about, and—like clockwork—he’d fire back, “You didn’t know that, John?”

Fast forward . . . and somehow, that move made it to the next generation.

Years ago, I was at my son’s new house for my birthday. After dinner, we stepped outside. I asked if there was another way out to the main road.

He didn’t say yes or no. He just pointed to a nearby sign: No Outlet. Then he looked at me and said, “You didn’t see that sign?”

We both laughed. Grandpop would’ve been proud.

But here’s the thing—highlighting what someone doesn’t know rarely helps. It just creates distance.

A better move? Spark curiosity.

Not knowing isn’t the problem. Unwillingness is.

If you think you’ve got it all figured out, you stop learning. If you think you’re not smart enough, you stop trying. If you’re set in your ways, school’s out.

Willingness is the difference-maker.

It’s subtle, but powerful. Less force, more openness.

Instead of pushing your way through life with willpower, try approaching it with willingness. You’ll notice more. Hear more. And oddly enough, things tend to go better.

In conversations—especially tough ones—drop the need to be right and bring willingness instead. You’ll be surprised what opens up.

In life, same deal.Looking for something? Don’t force it—be willing to let it show up. Happiness, opportunity, even those small, unexpected wins—they’re easier to see when you’re not locked into one narrow outcome.

Think of willingness as taking off the blinders.

If you like affirmations, try this one:

I’m willing to be, do, or have ______.

That small shift matters. “I am” statements can create resistance. “I’m willing” creates room. And room is where change happens.

Willpower tries to bulldoze. Willingness opens doors.

So yeah—go ahead and give willingness a test drive.

You might just find yourself on a few more roads . . . without those “No Outlet” signs.

All the best,

John
