The One Thing Is No Thing
That sounds like something you’d read in a fortune cookie, doesn’t it?
But it’s deeper than that.
Are you always on the lookout for “the one thing”—the thing that’s finally going to change your life?
You’re not alone.
Sorry to break it to you . . . but the one thing? It’s a fictitious thing.
It usually shows up like this: “When I . . .”
When I find a better job . . . When I make a certain amount of money . . . When I meet my soulmate . . . When I get divorced . . . When I hit the lottery . . .
. . . then I’ll be complete.
Go ahead—fill in your own version.
Because even if you do get that “one thing,” it won’t last. It'll quietly be replaced by a new “one thing” . . . promising—again—to be the thing.
But what we’re really looking for . . . is no thing.
Most of us live in our heads. And our thoughts? They’re crowded with wants, plans, and imagined futures.
“No thing” shows up when you step away from all that. Even briefly.
When you take a break from thinking . . . and just experience.
That’s what Zen Buddhists call “no mind.”
A quiet mind isn’t filled with things. It's filled with . . . nothing.
No thing.
And strangely enough, that “no thing” feels like peace. Like everything’s okay. Like nothing’s missing.
And if you’re honest . . . isn’t that the “one thing” you’ve been chasing all along?
You can spend your whole life chasing the horizon . . . or you can notice the horizon is an illusion.
And when you stop chasing illusions . . . you start to glimpse no thing.
So here’s one last “one thing” to reflect on:
There’s nothing more valuable . . . than no thing.
All the best,
John
