Make Happiness Your Shadow
I think we’ve all heard it—happiness is a destination.
You know . . . get the job, get the house, get the relationship . . . then you’ll be happy.
I don’t buy it.
Happiness isn’t a destination. It doesn’t sit somewhere waiting for you to arrive.
It’s more like a state of mind . . . and if we’re honest, it kind of comes and goes on its own schedule.
You can’t force it.
You can’t will it into existence.
But . . . you can keep it nearby.
And the way I think about that is this—stay close to the sun.
Not the one in the sky . . . the one you step into when you’re not hanging out in dark places.
Because I don’t know about you, but I can disappear down a rabbit hole with the best of them.
And before I know it, I’m surrounded by the dark.
The good news?
At least for me . . . I can usually recognize when I’ve taken myself there.
And that means I can get myself out.
Here’s the thing.
When that metaphorical sun is shining . . . it casts a shadow.
And that shadow is actually a clue. It tells you the light is close by.
You’re just standing in the wrong spot.
So step out of it.
Happiness isn’t far away. Sometimes it’s just one small shift . . . one step . . . into the light.
Now sure—there are gonna be clouds.
There are going to be those dark nights of the soul. That’s part of the deal.
But if you can recognize, “Hey… I’m in the shadows right now,”
then you also know something else—
The sun can’t be that far away.
Happy moments are still available. You just have to move toward them.
No one else can do that part for you.
So maybe that’s the mission—
Notice when you’ve wandered into a dark corner . . .
Look for even the smallest sliver of light . . .
and then just start moving in that direction.
Because when you do . . . you don’t just find the light—
You become the one who leads yourself back into it.
And that’s how you make happiness your shadow.
All the best,
John
