Parallel Connections

We all learned this in school, right? That parallel lines don’t intersect.

I always think of two streets in Philadelphia – Walnut and Chestnut. They run side by side, go to the same places . . . but they never actually meet.

If you want to get from one to the other, you’ve gotta take a cross street.  At least, that’s how we learned it.

But then The Grasshopper throws in this curveball:
“Parallels don’t intersect . . . but they do connect.”

Now that’ll make you pause for a second  . . . and scratch your head.

Because you realize pretty quickly – he’s not talking about traffic patterns.

So I sat with it.

And here’s what came to me . . .

If you put two parallel lines next to each other – like a couple of popsicle sticks – you’ll see there’s a space between them.

We usually think of that space as . . . nothing. Just emptiness. Separation.

But what if it’s not?

What if that space is actually the connection?

What if it’s not a gap . . . but something more like connective tissue?

Now that starts to change things.

Because if you look at it that way, it’s a lot easier to imagine that everything is connected . . . especially us.

We tend to think we’re separate – independent, self-contained.
You over there, me over here.

But what if that’s just how it looks on the surface?

Underneath it, it’s the same life force running through all of us . . . and around all of us.

No breaks. No gaps. Just . . . continuity.

And if that’s even a little bit true, then it shifts how you interact with others.

Because now, that person you’re dealing with?

They’re not really separate from you.

This is long, roundabout way of saying we’re all connected. And developing that mindset stimulates the behavior to treat people like you want to be treated.

Be nice to others. Everyone you meet is carrying something.

You can lighten their load a bit by connecting to the belief that we’re all connected, and offer them your gift of kindness. You’ll feel better too.

All because you’re seeing the connection . . . instead of the space.

All the best,

John
