Reality Is Not Reasonable
Ever notice how quickly we try to reason our way out of reality?
Something happens . . . and almost instantly, we start explaining it.
We come up with reasons. Justifications. Stories.
It’s a game we all play.
And it’s a game we all lose.
Reality shows up – clear, simple, undeniable – and instead of facing it, we start layering it with “because.”
“The reason I can’t lose weight is because of my genes . . . not the ones that don’t fit – but the ones I got from my parents.”
“The reason I can’t stop drinking is because my family drank . . . my mother was an alcoholic, my grandfather was an alcoholic . . . our UPS driver is an alcoholic. Hmm… wonder if he could be my real father.”
We laugh – but that’s how it sounds.
And the moment we start leaning on reasons, we’ve already stepped away from what’s real.
Then we take it a step further . . .
We bring God into it.
“This happened because God is testing me.”
“It was God’s will.”
At that point, we’re not dealing with reality anymore—we’re dealing with our need to explain it.
We get addicted to reasons.
But here’s the problem . . .
Reality doesn’t need a reason.
It just is.
There’s a great line from singer Michael McDonald:
“No wise man has the power to reason away what seems to be.”
What seems to be . . . is reality.
No spin. No story. No interpretation.
Just . . . what is.
Author Byron Katie puts it even more directly. When someone says, “It shouldn’t be this way,” she responds, “How do I know it should be this way? Because this is the way it is.”
That’s reality.
And reality doesn’t come in versions.
Now – accepting reality doesn’t mean you gotta like it.
It doesn’t mean you agree with it.
And it definitely doesn’t mean things can’t change.
In fact . . . things are far more likely to change once you actually accept what’s real.
Because the moment you stop arguing with reality, you can finally respond to it.
That’s when your options show up.
But as long as you’re busy explaining it away – telling yourself it’s something other than what it is – you’re stuck.
You’re in the shadows.
So whatever is in your life right now . . .
Struggle. Loneliness. Frustration. Illness. Uncertainty.
It’s there.
Not because of a reason you need to figure out – but because it’s your current reality.
And the faster you accept that . . .
The faster you stop spinning stories . . .
The faster you can start doing something about it.
So maybe the only reasonable thing to do is this:
Instead of reacting with reasons. Respond to reality.
Because when you do . . . you’ll stare reality in the face instead of retreating to outer space.
All the best,
John
