Quick Reactions

Reactions . . . are actions without thought.

Poof. Something happens –
you see it, you hear it –
 and bam . . . you react.

It’s instant.

That’s why people train in certain disciplines – so they can react quickly and effectively. Martial arts is a great example. You never know what your opponent is going to throw at you, but through repetition, through practice, your body learns what to do.

There’s no time to think.
It’s instinct.

Now, a while back, I wrote a piece called “Judge Quickly.” The idea was simple: we all judge – it’s human. But if we let that judgment linger . . . it turns into drama.

So instead of a quick passing thought, it becomes a story.

A rabbit hole we go down.

And the same thing happens with reactions.

Picture this: someone cuts you off in traffic and nearly causes an accident. Instantly, your body takes over. You swerve, you brake – you avoid the crash.

That’s a reaction doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. It protects you.

But here’s the catch . . .

The danger passes . . . and your body is still amped up.

Adrenaline is pumping. Your heart’s racing.

And now, if you’re not careful, that reaction keeps going –
into anger, frustration, maybe even retaliation.

But it doesn’t have to.

You can step in and slow it down. Something as simple as a few deep breaths can begin to settle your system and bring you back to center much quicker.

And that’s really the key –

Start noticing your reactions while they’re happening.

Right there, in real time.

Because that moment of awareness? That’s the wedge.

That’s what keeps a small reaction from turning into something big and unnecessary.

When you catch it early, you keep it small.
Manageable.
Minuscule, even.

That’s what I mean by “quick reactions.”

Not just reacting quickly – but becoming aware of how you react . . . quickly.

Because that awareness? That’s the training.

And over time, it shifts you – from reacting . . . to responding.

And that shift can keep you out of a whole lot of trouble.

All the best,
John
