The Ladder of Success

Who hasn’t tried to climb the ladder of success?

My guess . . . not many.

And let’s be honest – most of us have fallen off that ladder at some point.

And when we do?

We tend to blame the ladder.

There’s an old line I’ve always liked:
You can’t climb a ladder with your hands in your pockets.

In other words . . . you’ve got to participate in your own success.
Or as a wise Chinese saying puts it:
 Talk doesn’t cook rice.

I was talking with one of my granddaughters over the Easter holiday.
She’s right on the edge of graduating college, and she asked me a big question:

“Do you think I’ll be successful?”

Now . . . I didn’t say yes or no.

Instead, I told her this: “You already sort for success.”

She looked at me like, What does that even mean?

So I explained:
Your focus is on success.
And when your focus is there . . . failure starts to fade out of view.

That’s optimism.

Not wishful thinking – optimism.

It’s like setting your internal radar.

You tune it to pick up anything that lines up with where you want to go.

And when your radar is set like that . . . something interesting happens:

You start to see opportunities.

You notice pathways that were always there – but you couldn’t see before.

Now don’t get me wrong – hard work matters.
 It’s part of the deal.

But when you’re working towards something you desire . . .
it creates what I like to call a good sweat.

Here’s where a lot of people get stuck though . . . They never even get onto the ladder.

Why?

Because there’s a massive crowd at the bottom . . . all fighting for that first rung.

But when you aim higher – when you sort for success – you start thinking differently.

You build a momentum mindset.

You move from “It can’t be done” to “Where’s the way up?”

Being optimistic isn’t pie-in-the-sky thinking.
 It’s a strategy.

It’s setting your radar so your eyes can recognize the path . . .
 when it shows up.

And who knows . . . You might even discover there’s a faster way than climbing the ladder altogether.

So yeah – learn how to climb.

But it wouldn’t hurt to have a pretty good elevator speech ready too.

All the best,
John
