What’s Possible?
It dawned on me recently . . . that a lot of what we call “possible” today . . . used to be labeled “impossible.”
And thank goodness there were people who didn’t buy into that label.
A classic example? The 4-minute mile.
For the longest time, it was considered scientifically impossible for a human being to run a mile in under four minutes. Doctors said it. Experts said it. It just couldn’t be done.
Until 1954 . . . when British doctor Roger Bannister went out and did it anyway.
And here’s the wild part – once he broke that barrier, something shifted.
Within just three years, 16 other runners had done the same “impossible” thing.
So what changed?
Human ability?
The laws of physics?
No . . . just the belief about what was possible.
But this isn’t really a history lesson – it’s a question.
What’s possible . . . for you?
And more importantly . . . how often do you ask that without immediately shutting it down with “that’s impossible”?
That’s when it’s time to engage your imagination. Because your imagination doesn’t have those limits. You can do anything you want in there.
You can go anywhere. Try anything. See anything. No restrictions.
Now, does everything you imagine come true? Of course not.
But there’s also no downside to exploring it.
Take John Lennon. Maybe he really did picture a world at peace. He didn’t exactly get there . . . but the side benefit? He gave us a song that still inspires people all over the world to think bigger.
And that’s the point.
Sometimes the value isn’t just in reaching the outcome . . .
it’s in expanding what you believe is even possible in the first place.
Because once that expands – so do you.
So take a page from that British doctor . . .
Give it a go. And discover first hand . . .
You reap what you sow.
All the best,
John
