The Only Thing I Can Do
You’ve probably had your share of customer service nightmares, so don’t worry – I’m not going to pile mine on top of yours.
But I will tell you something I noticed while I was right in the middle of one.
After spending way too many hours on the phone getting absolutely nowhere, I found myself doing what we all do – I got in my head. Just replaying it. Over and over. Letting myself know exactly how irritated I was.
Sound familiar?
It was now nighttime. Nobody I could call, nobody I could reach, nothing I could actually do about it until morning.
And yet . . . there I was. Still going at it in my mind. Rehashing every detail like somehow that was going to fix it.
Then it hit me.
The only time I could do something about the situation . . . was tomorrow. During business hours. That’s it.
Not now. Not tonight.
And suddenly it became really clear – going over it again and again wasn’t moving anything forward. It was just keeping me stuck.
So a better question popped into my head:
“What else could I be doing right now that might actually feel good?”
A few ideas came up . . . and one of them was this – sitting down and sharing this thought with you.
And then? I went and watched a movie that’s been sitting in my queue for way too long.
So here’s something to think about:
How often do we tell ourselves the only thing we can do . . . is sit there and stew?
When in reality, that’s just one option. And not a very productive one I might add.
There’s almost always something better we could be doing while we wait.
Something a bit lighter. A little more enjoyable.
Just a thought.
All the best,
John
