It’s Time To Space Out
I was watching coverage of that recent space trip around the moon . . . and I found my mind drifting – not out there, but into a thought about how quiet space must be.
And then I kind of dropped back down to Earth and realized something:
Every sound we hear . . . comes out of nothing.
It wasn’t there . . . then it shows up . . . and then it disappears right back into where it came from.
And if you really pay attention, you’ll notice something interesting – there’s silence between the sounds. Not just between them . . . but underneath them, too.
That silence? That’s your creative space.
Now, if you’ve ever driven on the interstate, you’ve probably seen those billboards that say, “This space for rent.”
Well . . . creativity works the same way.
It’s available any time you notice the space between your thoughts – the gap between all that mental noise.
So here’s the practice: every now and then, just . . .
Stop.
Look.
Listen.
Not for more thoughts . . . but for the space between them.
Because when you start to notice that space – and you make a habit of it – you’ll feel something shift. Creativity starts flowing through you instead of you chasing after it.
See, creativity is always there. It just needs a space to be born into.
And you create that space . . . by noticing it was there all along.
So instead of trying to think your way to a solution, try this:
Ask your question . . . and then give it some room.
Let your mind breathe a little.
And don’t be too surprised if an answer shows up out of nowhere.
Because that’s usually where the good ones come from.
We’ve been trained to rely almost entirely on our intellect – like if we just think hard enough, long enough, we’ll figure it out.
But have you noticed? That approach tends to give you the same answers that didn’t work last time.
That’s not exactly space-age thinking.
Here it is in a nutshell: You’re more creative than you think.
In fact . . . say that out loud.
And as you do, slow it down – put just a little space between each word:
You’re . . . more . . . creative . . . than . . . you . . . think.
That space right there?
That’s where creativity lives.
All the best,
John
