Happiness Doesn’t Last—But This Does
Have you ever noticed how happiness kind of . . . comes and goes?
It shows up when things go your way.
Your team wins.
You scratch off a ticket and hit a little something. You ask someone out and they say, “yes.”
Boom – there it is. Happiness.
But just as quickly . . . it’s gone.
Because for every one thing that makes you happy, there are about ten things waiting to annoy you, frustrate you, or just not go your way.
I’ve said before – if happiness were a place, it’d be full of short-term renters. Nobody really lives there. People just pass through.
But peace?
That’s different.
Peace isn’t something that shows up when life behaves.
Peace is something you can access anytime . . . if you can quiet the noise in your mind.
Because a quiet mind is a peaceful mind.
See, happiness depends on what’s happening out there.
Peace comes from what’s happening in here.
Now, don’t get me wrong – you can absolutely set yourself up for more happy moments.
You can start noticing the little things.
Like a dog with its head out the car window - why is that always great?
That’s your internal radar picking up on joy.
But peace . . . peace is something deeper.
It’s a place you can return to whenever you decide to slow things down and turn the volume down on all that mental chatter.
And there are a hundred ways to do that.
You don’t need all hundred – just pick one. Practice it. Stick with it.
Because when peace becomes your baseline, something interesting happens . . .
You actually start experiencing more happiness.
Not because you’re chasing it – but because you’re no longer stuck dwelling on everything that makes you unhappy.
So when happiness shows up, enjoy it.
Welcome it in.
Maybe even train yourself to notice it more often.
But don’t rely on it.
Because you can’t control when happiness arrives . . .
but you can choose peace, anytime you want.
And when you do that consistently?
You might be surprised how much more often happiness decides to stop by.
All the best,
John
