Respond . . . or Escape?
Let me pose a question.
Where do you spend most of your day . . . here – or there?
“Here” is reality. It’s what’s actually happening. “There” . . . that’s the mental escape. The place we drift off to in our heads.
And if you think about it, you can only ever really be here. You can visit “there” in your mind – but you can’t live there.
Still, a lot of us try.
We spend a surprising amount of time in a place that doesn’t actually exist . . . imagining, replaying, rehearsing, escaping.
And here’s the catch: You can’t get there without first going through here.
Yeah . . . I know. Starting to sound a little like Dr. Seuss. Right?
But it matters.
Because every time you try to skip “here,” you actually delay getting anywhere at all. You stall out. You stop moving forward.
Why? Because you’re busy living in a version of reality that isn’t real.
The truth is, you can’t move on from “here” . . . until you actually acknowledge it. Feel it. Deal with it.
But we’ve gotten pretty good at avoiding that.
We’ve been conditioned to escape – to float off into these mental “theres” just to get away from what’s right in front of us.
Problem is . . . those fantasy balloons always pop.
And when they do?
You land right back . . . here.
So maybe the better option is this:
Be here. As often as you can.
Because “here” is where reality lives. And when you’re grounded in reality, you make better decisions – real decisions. Not those pie-in-the-sky plans that only work in your imagination.
Choices made here and now? They’ve got a shot.
Choices made in “there and then”? Not so much.
And if you really think about it . . . The quality of your life is never found “there.”
“There” is just a promise. And tomorrow? It’s promised to no one.
Life is happening here.
And it gets better when you start responding to it as it unfolds.
Because in the end, it’s not what happens to us that shapes our life . . . It’s how we respond to those situations.
That’s where the power is.
So instead of escaping – respond.
Deal with what’s in front of you. Right now.
Because every time you respond in the moment, you build something important: confidence. Confidence that you can handle life as it comes.
And that’s where the real juice is. Not in your escape plan . . . but In your response.
Life isn’t waiting for you “there.”
It’s right here, right now.
I wonder how soon you’ll respond.
All the best,
John
