The Pretenders
We’ve all heard of imposter syndrome, right?
That feeling where you think, “I’m not really qualified to be doing this.”
That’s you turning the lens inward . . . measuring yourself against some impossible standard – and coming up short.
And honestly, no wonder so many people feel that way. They’re chasing perfection . . . and nobody gets there. Nobody ever has.
So if you’re dealing with that, here’s my simple prescription: don’t aim for perfection – aim for excellence.
Just be as good as you can be.
Now… that’s not what this recording is about.
It’s about pretenders.
Different animal.
These are the people who know they’re not who they claim to be . . .
but they go out of their way to convince you otherwise.
And once you start listening for it, you’ll hear it everywhere.
They’ll say things like, “I’m a really smart person.”
Which is interesting . . . because most genuinely smart people don’t feel the need to announce it.
They’ll tell you how much money they make . . . how successful they are . . .
usually within the first few minutes of meeting you.
That’s a tell.
Or listen for the absolutes –
“I always…”
“I never…”
“I never start fights, but I finish them.”
“I always give people the benefit of the doubt.”
Really? Always? Never?
In my experience, it’s usually closer to the opposite . . . as in . . .
“I always do” and “I never don’t.”
Pretenders tend to be loud.
They’ll talk over you, especially if you challenge them.
Because somewhere deep down, they believe volume equals credibility.
It doesn’t.
Here’s the part they don’t realize: Most people eventually can see right through them.
Now, if you catch yourself doing this—pretending a little, polishing the image a bit too much – the best thing you can do for your credibility is simple:
Just come clean.Drop the act.
Because the longer you keep it up, the harder it is to hold together.
But if I’m being honest?
Most pretenders won’t do that.
They’ll keep shouting from the rafters . . .
now until the hereafter.
All the best,
John
