Your Mind Is A Fear Machine
Where does fear live?
It lives in your mind . . . and takes its toll on your body.
If you start paying attention – really noticing your thoughts – you’ll see it.
Fear . . . on parade.
Every waking hour . . . and even in your dreams.
One fearful thought after another moves in, sets up shop in your mind . . .
and your body pays the price for that mental grind.
Now, Dr. Dave Dobson once suggested that the only sensation we come through the birthing canal with . . . is fear.
It shows up in the body first.
Then later, as the intellect develops, the mind tries to explain it . . . and that’s when we give it a name: fear.
And fear triggers that familiar response – fight or flight . . . or the often-overlooked third “F” word: freeze.
Sometimes we’re too scared to fight . . . too scared to run . . . so we just lock up – frozen in place with our disabling fear.
Now here’s the real deal – you’re never going to eradicate fear. But you can learn to have it visit less often.
How?
By catching those fearful thoughts in real time.
Notice them . . . as they’re happening.
Watch them like a witness, not a participant.
Don’t jump in. Don’t wrestle with them.
Just observe – like a bystander at the scene of an accident.
And it goes without saying that yes, sometimes fear is useful.
It can be a warning worth heeding.
But most of the time?
It’s just your mind . . . seething.
And if there’s only one lesson worth holding onto, maybe it’s this:
You are not your thoughts.
Your mind has a mind of its own. It’s separate from you – even though it does a pretty convincing impression of you.
And if you’re not careful, you buy into the act . . . and let its fearful agenda run your life.
But the moment you start noticing those thoughts – without fighting them, without feeding them – something shifts.
That’s your way out.
That’s your path back to a more peaceful body.
So train your brain.
When fear shows up, notice it.
Give it your attention . . . without interaction.
And what happens next?
Your fearful thoughts begin to lose their traction.
All the best,
John
