What Is Your Life Doing?
Here’s the short version: Your life is happening outside your head — not inside — with all the stories you tell yourself about it.
Your life is doing one thing above all else: evolving.
The question is whether we evolve along with it . . . or stay stuck arguing with reality.
And most of us know what that argument sounds like.
“I should be further along.”
“This shouldn’t be happening.”
“If people understood me, my life would be different.”
Meanwhile, life keeps moving. Full speed ahead.
I can tell you from experience: staying stuck is mostly defending our limitations. It’s spending energy explaining why we can’t move forward instead of simply moving forward.
And who are we usually arguing with? Ourselves.
So how do we get back into the flow of life?It starts with something simple: noticing where we actually are instead of obsessing over where we think we should be.
That reminds me of a story. A friend of mine used to golf with a guy who kept score in a very unusual way. He’d write down the score he thought he should have gotten instead of the one he actually shot.
Not surprisingly, his golf game never improved.
Why? Because you can’t evolve from an imaginary starting point. You can only evolve from the reality of where you are.
And that’s true in life, too.
The moment you honestly notice your current reality — without defending it, exaggerating it, or explaining it away — you step back into the flow of life.
Here’s the bigger insight: evolving life is reality. They’re the same exact thing.
Reality keeps moving whether we approve of it or not. Life keeps unfolding whether we resist it or not.
And the fastest way to reconnect with life is simply to notice it as it is. That noticing pulls you out of your head and out of resistance.
So practice catching yourself. Pause and notice where you are without immediately launching into the story of how you got there.
“My parents loved my sister more.”
“I never had good role models.”
“People don’t appreciate my talent.”
Maybe some of those things happened. But replaying them over and over keeps us frozen in place instead of moving at life’s pace.
Life only moves in one direction: forward. It never retreats.
And when you notice that, it becomes easier to leave the past where it belongs — in the history books — in the past — and rejoin your evolving life.
One final thought:
Nothing keeps people stuck faster than the word “but.”
“But you don’t understand.”
“But this happened to me.”
“But I should be further ahead.”
The word “but” is often our attempt to argue with reality. And reality never loses that argument.
All the best,
John
