How Exceptional Are You?

Do you know someone who’s exceptional? Maybe it’s you.

One thing I’ve noticed about exceptional people is this: they genuinely love what they do. They’re committed to it. Obsessed with improving at it.

But there’s another part we often overlook.

They work at it. Relentlessly.

That’s the part most people don’t want to hear.

We admire greatness, but we don’t always want the lifestyle that creates it. We want the results without the repetition. The success without the sacrifice.

Our culture feeds us the idea that there’s always a shortcut.“Seven Easy Steps.”“A simple hack.”“A secret formula.”

Meanwhile, the people who truly excel are usually doing something far less glamorous: showing up consistently and doing the work over and over again.

Take football great Tom Brady.

Tom was still competing at an elite level in his mid-40s in a sport where most players were long retired. Was he gifted? Sure. But there are lots of gifted athletes.

What separated him was consistency. Discipline. Year-round commitment. His diet, training, sleep, preparation — all of it mattered to him. He was willing to do what most people simply wouldn’t keep doing.

And that’s the real lesson.

Envy doesn’t help much. Emulation does.

Instead of asking, “Why are they so great?” ask, “What are they doing that I’m not willing to do yet?”

I love photography, and there are photographers whose work I deeply admire. But I never sit around wondering why my photos aren’t as good as theirs.

I know why.

They work harder at it than I do. They practice more. Study more. Shoot more consistently. And while I could come up with a dozen reasons why they’re “luckier” or more talented, the truth is much simpler:

They’re more committed.

That’s not discouraging. It’s actually empowering.

Because exceptional people aren’t usually doing impossible things. They’re doing possible things with uncommon consistency.

If you want to stand out instead of being just another “also-ran,” you’ll probably have to adopt routines that most people avoid — even though they could do them.

Exceptional isn’t reserved for a chosen few.

But it does ask more from you than most people are willing to give.

So the final question is: How willing are you to be exceptional?
