Humble Brag
What’s your humble brag?
You know . . . that thing you’re really good at, but you almost feel awkward admitting.
Maybe you’re a great listener. Maybe you can calm people down. Maybe you’re organized, creative, funny, dependable, or the person everyone secretly counts on when things go sideways.
But instead of owning it, we tend to brush it off.
“Ah, it’s nothing.”
“Anybody could do that.”
“No big deal.”
After a while, we get so used to minimizing our gifts that we start believing they don’t really count.
A lot of us — especially women — were taught not to shine too brightly. Don’t brag. Don’t show off. Stay humble. As the old saying goes, we “hide our light under a bushel.”
Now, this isn’t permission to become obnoxious. Nobody enjoys a nonstop self-promoter.
But there’s a big difference between arrogance . . . and honestly acknowledging your strengths.
So start small.
Privately admit to yourself that you’re actually good at something. Think about moments when that quality showed up naturally. Remember how it felt to use it. There’s usually a quiet kind of joy connected to our real strengths.
Then maybe — just maybe — say it out loud to somebody else.
Not as a performance. Not for applause. Just as a fact.
Because when you hide your abilities long enough, it starts to feel like you don’t have any. And that creates the false idea that you have no inner resources to draw from.
But you do.
Your humble brag doesn’t have to change the world. It just has to be acknowledged.
And honestly, if you’ve been hiding it this long, you’re probably in no danger of becoming a braggart.
You’re simply becoming someone willing to recognize their own value.
And something interesting happens when you do that.
Once you admit one hidden strength, others start waking up too.
Skills. Talents. Confidence. Parts of yourself that have been sitting quietly in the background waiting for permission to come forward.
If you keep hiding, nothing changes.
But the moment you admit what’s already true . . . you begin to step into more of the person known as you.
All the best,
John
