Before The Warranty Runs Out

There are only a few guarantees in life: death, taxes, and apparently endless reruns of Law & Order: SVU.

Other than that? We’re all living on a limited warranty.

Some people get a hundred years. Some get far less. But eventually, every warranty runs out.

And that raises the age-old question: What’s the point of all this?

I don’t know if anyone has the complete answer, but I think part of it is this:

We’re here to make a contribution.

Whether we realize it or not, we’re constantly affecting other people. Even doing nothing affects people. As the NLP folks say, “You cannot not respond.” Even silence says something.

So what’s your contribution supposed to be?

I don’t think anybody else can tell you that. But I do think there’s a clue: peace.

When your life starts producing more peaceful moments, chances are you’re moving in the right direction.

Now, that’s different from chasing pleasure. Pleasure comes and goes. It rises and falls like the tide. Trying to make it permanent usually ends badly.

A lot of us spend our lives focused only on the “human” part of ourselves — the ego, the intellect, the constant craving for validation, comfort, or being right.

And being right? That’s a pleasure too.

But if you always have to be right, everybody else has to be wrong. That gets lonely fast.

The deeper part of us — our being — works differently.

When you get quiet enough to notice it, life starts feeling simpler. Richer. More peaceful. Small moments suddenly matter more.

And interestingly, that peacefulness often leads you toward your real contribution.

There’s nothing wrong with being human. The trick is balance.

Let your being guide your human side a little more often.

Because the best use of this limited warranty isn’t squeezing every drop of pleasure out of life.

It’s contributing something meaningful while actually enjoying being here.

Before the warranty runs out.

All the best,

John
