I Don’t Have the Time
How many times have you said, “I don’t have the time”?
Truth is, most of the time, it’s not really about time at all. It’s about priority.
Whenever I catch myself saying it — or hear someone else say it — a little alarm bell goes off in my head.
Because years ago, I realized something: when we say we don’t have time for something, what we usually mean is . . . it’s not high enough on our list.
Now, that may sound harsh, but think about it.
The things that truly matter to us somehow get done. We find the time. We rearrange things. We stay up later, wake up earlier, cancel something else, or move mountains if we have to.
Why?
Because it’s a priority.
That word carries more weight than “important.”
We throw around the word “important” all the time. Exercise is important. Family is important. Sleep is important. Returning phone calls is important.
But “priority” is different.
Priority means this comes first.
And if you’ve got ten priorities, then you probably don’t have priorities — you have a wish list. At some point, something has to move to the top.
So the next time you hear yourself saying, “I just don’t have the time,” maybe pause and rephrase it honestly:
“It’s not a priority for me right now.”
That changes the conversation pretty quickly.
And here’s the funny part. Albert Einstein once suggested time itself is basically a human invention — a measurement we made up to organize life.
So if time is this slippery thing we created, then maybe the real issue was never time in the first place.
Maybe it’s always been priority.
Because somehow, someway, when something matters enough . . . we find the time.
