Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
You may have never thought about it this way, but where you are in life right now is largely the result of a series of decisions.
Every decision leads to another decision. And what you choose at those moments determines, little by little, the life you end up living.
Think of it like driving to an unfamiliar destination.
You don't have a GPS. You don't have a map. You just have a general sense of where you want to go.
Along the way, you come to a fork in the road. Do you go left or right? Whichever path you choose takes you to another fork, and then another, and then another.
Eventually, whether you arrive where you intended to go—or end up somewhere entirely different—is the result of the decisions you made along the way.
The obvious answer is, "Well, make better decisions."
Fair enough. Who could argue with that?
The problem is that's not what most people do.
Imagine taking a wrong turn and ending up in a ditch.
At that point, you still have choices.
You can shake your fist at god and rail against reality. You can spend your energy replaying the mistake and wishing things had gone differently.
But none of those decisions gets the car out of the ditch.
Those are mental excursions, not action plans.
The most important decision you can make in moments like these is simply to recognize that you still have a choice.
I'm not suggesting the next decision will be easy.
Only necessary.
If you choose "woe is me," you've decided to stay stuck in the mud.
But if you choose a course of action – even a small one – you give yourself a chance to move forward.
That's the key.
Recognize that you have a choice.
Then make a decision that comes with a plan.
Because the decisions that move you out of your head have the best odds of getting you where you want to go.
All the best,
John
