Misery Is A Head Trip

There's no denying it. Misery is a head trip.

The good news? It's a trip you can interrupt before it goes very far.

It starts by noticing what's happening in your body. Before misery becomes a story, it's just a feeling – a tightness, a heaviness, an uneasiness.

If you don't notice it there, those feelings bubble up into thoughts. And once they do, you've created a feedback loop. The thoughts feed the feelings, the feelings feed the thoughts, and before long you're glued to your misery.

Try paying real attention to those uncomfortable sensations while they're still just sensations.

They're much easier to deal with before your mind grabs hold of them and starts weaving another never-ending story. Because once your head gets involved, it always seems to want another chapter.

Now, sitting with uncomfortable feelings isn't exactly enjoyable. In fact, it may be the last thing you want to do.

But it's probably the most productive thing you can do.

Misery loves the company of your thoughts. That's where it stays alive.

The way through emotional pain is to metabolize it – to let yourself actually feel it instead of explaining it. The moment you assign meaning to a feeling, you've stopped metabolizing it and started mobilizing your misery.

Instead, stay with the feeling.

No commentary.

No analysis.

Just allow yourself to experience what's already there.

This isn't a one-and-done exercise. You'll probably have to do it again . . . and again . . . until it becomes second nature.

These feelings belong to you. They're simply asking for your attention before they can let go of their weight.

Not wanting to be alone with your feelings is a little like not wanting to spend time with your in-laws. Every now and then, it's a necessary visit.

Stay in your head and you'll produce more dread. Sit with your feelings instead. That's how you come back out to life.
