Who Are You Spending Time With?

There's an old psychology saying that goes, "You become like the people you spend time with."

Whether that's actually true isn't what I'm interested in.

I just want you to try the idea on for size. We've all heard the sayings:
"Birds of a feather flock together."
"If you lie down with dogs, you get fleas."

Here's the twist . . .

I'm not talking about the people around you.

I'm talking about the person you spend the most time with.

You.

More specifically, the thoughts you spend your days listening to.

Here's an experiment.

Take ten minutes one day and write down every thought that comes into your mind.

No editing.
No censoring.
Just write.

You'll probably discover something surprising.

You spend most of your life with your thoughts, and like most people, you've probably assumed those thoughts are you.

You are not your thoughts.

I like to put it this way: Your mind has a mind of its own.

When you see your thoughts written on paper, it becomes obvious. Some are helpful. Some are ridiculous. Some contradict each other five minutes later.

It's like someone else is writing the script, and you've been playing the lead role without ever questioning the casting.

Once you see that, something changes.

You stop participating in every thought and start observing them instead.

And the observer . . .

That's the real you.

The more time you spend there, the less interested you become in believing every story your mind tells.

Bottom line?

You stop identifying with your mind . . .

. . . and finally start enjoying the company of yourself.

All the best,

John
