Stop Defining Yourself By What You're Not
Have you ever caught yourself saying something like, "I'm nothing like my mother"?
It's an interesting statement because it doesn't tell us who you are. It tells us who you aren't.
We do this all the time.
"I don't eat red meat." "I don't drink." "I'm not like those rich people who flaunt their wealth."
Notice what's happening. We're defining ourselves by opposition. We're describing our lives by drawing attention to what we reject.
The problem is that knowing who you aren't doesn't automatically reveal who you are.
Who you are isn't the opposite of someone else. It isn't a reaction. It isn't a comparison.
It's something much bigger.
Think about creativity for a moment. Before an artist puts brush to canvas, every possibility exists. Before a writer types the first word, every story is still available. That's a little like who you are.
When you repeatedly declare who you're not, you narrow those possibilities. You reinforce an old identity instead of discovering a new one.
Now this isn't a directive to replace negative labels with positive affirmations. That's just a bunch of hooey.
Instead, try something much simpler.
Start noticing how often you define yourself by what you reject.
Notice how often your sentences begin with "I'm not..."
Just notice.
That small act of noticing interrupts a conditioned habit.
Then consider another possibility: What if you aren't your body, your personality, your job, your bank account, or other people's opinions of you? Those things can all be compared, measured, and ranked.
Who you are can't be.
Who you are is more like a current flowing through you than a label that defines you. You’re creative, alive, and impossible to reduce to a list of characteristics.
The more tightly you hold on to who you aren't, the less room there is for that current to move.
Everyone has access to that same source of creativity. No one gets a larger share than anyone else.
The only price of admission is letting go of the need to define yourself by opposition.
So today, pay attention.
Every time you hear yourself explaining who you aren't, smile. You've just caught an old habit in the act.
And every time you catch it, you create a little more room for who you are to emerge.
The you that's been there all along . . .
. . . just waiting for who you’re not to get out of the way.
All the best,
John
