What Are Your Intentions?

Years ago, I woke up with one of those Grasshopper messages that was too simple to ignore: "Intention: Giving flow somewhere to go."

I've been writing about it ever since.

An intention is more than something you'd like to happen. It's giving your creative energy a direction instead of letting it spill everywhere at once.

Think of digging a groove in the ground. Once the groove is there, the water knows exactly where to flow. Without that groove, it simply spreads out and loses its force.

That's what happens with our intentions.

If you have one or two clear ones, your energy has somewhere to go. If you have twenty, your attention gets diluted. You end up busy, but not moving very far.

A lot of people think intention is enough – that you simply declare what you want and wait for the universe to deliver it.

It's a nice theory.

But my late teacher, Dr. Dave Dobson, had a memorable response to theories.

"Theory is bullshit . . . and defending your theory is bullshit squared."

His point was simple: intention without action is just wishful thinking.

Every worthwhile intention needs a plan. It doesn't have to be elaborate. It just has to give your intention somewhere to travel.

It also helps to shorten your active list.

Many people aren't short on dreams. They're overloaded with them.

"I'll write a book... learn Italian... start a business... paint... get in shape... meditate more... and somehow solve world peace before the weekend."

None of those goals are bad.

There are simply too many grooves.

The result is scattered focus . . . and scattered results.

Yes, by all means, keep your dreams. Just don't ask today's energy to accomplish all of tomorrow's ambitions.

Choose what's most important.

Dig one groove.

Then let your flow do what flow naturally does.

If you're tired of watered-down results, don't look for more motivation.

Give your flow somewhere to go.

All the best,

John
