Are You Disciplined?
I think most people have the wrong definition of discipline.
They think discipline means forcing yourself to do things you don't like over and over until they become habits.
But the word discipline comes from the Latin word discipulus, meaning pupil, student, or disciple.
That's a very different way of looking at it.
Let's say you want to achieve something that's going to require more effort than you've given in the past. What's the usual approach?
Try harder.
Work longer.
Push more.
But if doing more of the same was the answer, wouldn't you already be where you want to be?
That sounds less like a strategy and more like a recipe for frustration.
Here's another way to think about discipline.
What if discipline isn't about forcing yourself to do something?
What if it's about becoming a disciple of someone who's already figured it out?
Someone has already walked the path you want to walk. Someone has already solved many of the problems you're about to encounter.
So find those people.
Read their autobiography. Listen to their interviews. Watch their lectures. Study what they did, how they thought, and what they practiced consistently.
In other words, discover their discipline.
Then follow the path they've already cleared.
You'll make fewer mistakes, avoid a few unnecessary detours, and step in fewer piles of shh... shamrocks.
The road is already there.
Seek it out.
Become a disciple.
And in the process, you'll become a lot more disciplined.
All the best,
John
