The Blink Of An Eye

I’m sure I’m not the first person to have this thought, but it was sort of a first for me:

Life goes by in the blink of an eye.

Now I've heard that expression my whole life, but one day it landed differently. Instead of hearing the words, I actually pictured it. A blink. Open. Closed. Open again.

And it made me wonder . . .

What am I doing with my blink?

Am I spending it complaining about things I can't change? Am I looking backward, wishing I'd done more? Or am I paying attention to what's right in front of me while I still have the chance?

The older I get, the more I think life is a process of addition and subtraction.

Early on, we're in addition mode. We add possessions, responsibilities, accomplishments, goals, obligations, and activities. We build careers, raise families, collect experiences, and fill up our calendars.

But at some point, if we're fortunate, we begin to realize that more isn't what it’s cracked up to be.

We start subtracting.

We let go of unnecessary commitments. We stop chasing things that don't matter. We become less interested in impressing people and more interested in understanding ourselves.

Why?

Because we're looking for something more valuable than achievement.

Peace of mind.

And I've come to believe that peace of mind may be the most precious thing we ever possess. More valuable than anything we can buy. More satisfying than any destination we can visit.

It's what we're all searching for, whether we realize it or not.

So here's a question:

What's taking away your peace and making your blink less enjoyable?

Maybe it's an old resentment. Maybe it's clutter—physical or mental. Maybe it's a habit, an obligation, or a story you've been carrying around for years.

Whatever it is, perhaps it's time for a little housecleaning.

Because life really does go by in the blink of an eye.

And if that's true, may I recommend this: make your one flutter more about serenity and less about clutter.

All the best,

John
