There Is No Subconscious

Now that headline probably sounds a little weird coming from a hypnotist. But hear me out.

I don't believe there's such a thing as a subconscious mind.

Before you start gathering the firewood for the stake, let me explain.

There is a part of our mind that isn't our conscious mind. I just don't think "subconscious" is the right word for it.

Sub implies it's somehow beneath our conscious mind. And unconscious makes it sound like it's asleep or unaware.

I don't think either description fits.

I had a wonderful hypnosis teacher who called it the other-than-conscious mind. His point was that this part of us is always aware – it just operates differently than our conscious thinking.

To my mind, the problem was his term: “other-than-conscious.” It wasn't exactly easy to wrap your head around.

So I've started calling it conscious adjacent.

I like that term because it suggests this awareness runs right alongside our conscious mind. It's not underneath it. It's not asleep. It's simply operating in parallel.

And it's paying attention all the time – even while you're asleep.

Think about a mother sleeping through a thunderstorm.

The next morning someone asks, "Did you hear that storm last night?"

"What storm?" she says.

But let that same mother's child cry out during a thunderstorm from three rooms away, and she's instantly awake.

Why?

Because this adjacent awareness never stopped listening. It recognized something important before her conscious mind did.

Now I'm not on a mission to erase the words subconscious or unconscious. They're deeply woven into our language.

I'm simply suggesting there's a more accurate way to think about this remarkable part of ourselves.

It's like having a laser focused companion that's on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week . . .

. . . and, in many ways, it's paying closer attention than we are.

All the best,

John
