What You Want May Cost Too Much

I heard an obscure old song on the radio the other day, and it had a line that went something like this: Going after what you want may cause you to lose what you have.

I had to stop and think about the merits of that lyrical line.

And here’s what I came up with.

Picture a married couple with two adorable kids. The husband works outside the home, and the wife stays home with the children.

Now this guy isn't just earning a living for his family – he's chasing a dream. His top-line goal is to rise to the top of his profession.

I think a lot of us can relate to that mission.

But what's missing in all that zeal is this: you have to do more at home than provide the meals.

When we get too identified with our perceived role, we not only cloud our vision, we also sow the seeds of division.

This fellow may reach his professional dream, but in the process his family life is missing the peaches and cream.

There's a reason "stop and smell the roses" is such solid advice. It reminds us to pay attention to the whole picture instead of just a slice.

And at the risk of using one metaphor too many, consider this: putting all your eggs in one basket may cause your personal life to blow a gasket.

Sometimes getting everything you want ends up costing you something you never wanted to lose.

All the best,

John
