Are You Shooting Fish in a Barrel?
Here's one of life's obvious truths that most of us ignore: the low-hanging fruit only feeds you for so long. Eventually, real hunger shows up.
Think about the multi-level marketing business model. At first, you sell to the easy customers – your family, your friends, your neighbors. That's the low-hanging fruit.
Sooner or later, though, you run out of familiar faces. If you want to grow, you have to leave your comfort zone and find people you've never met. That's where the risk begins . . . and where the opportunity lives.
Life works the same way.
The safest path usually gives you more of what you already have. If you want something different, eventually you have to climb out on the skinny branches. There's a reason the saying "No risk, no reward" has lasted so long. It's true.
You already know what your current routine delivers: Tomorrow will look a lot like today.
So when you think about making a change, fear inevitably asks, "What if I risk it and lose?"
A more useful question is, "What am I really risking?"
Most of the time, the only thing you're protecting is the rut of a life you've been trying to outgrow.
Now, I'm not talking about taking risks just to collect a bigger paycheck, a nicer house, or more toys. Those things have their place, but they're rarely the reward we're actually looking for.
We've all seen people who have everything . . . and still want more.
The risk I'm referring to goes much deeper.
It's the risk of letting go of the person you've been pretending to be.
Many of us spend years trying to become somebody, when we've been somebody all along. We pile on titles, accomplishments, possessions, and other people's approval, hoping they'll finally make us feel complete.
They don't.
The real reward comes when you stop trying to become someone else and start uncovering who you already are.
Ask yourself this:
How much pressure do you put on yourself every day to be somebody different?
That's a huge risk . . . with almost no reward.
And before anyone hears this as permission to say, "That's just the way I am," that's not what I'm talking about. Refusing to grow isn't authenticity. It's quaking fear.
Real authenticity takes courage.
It means peeling away the layers you've added over the years – the masks, the expectations, the pretending.
Yes, you will lose something in the process: the false identity you've worked so hard to protect.
But what you'll gain is far more valuable.
You'll discover someone you actually enjoy living with.Ironically, the greatest risk isn't becoming someone new. It's spending your life pretending to be someone you're not.
So if you're going to risk something, risk taking off the disguise.Because when the illusion falls away, you'll discover there was never much to lose . . .
. . . and everything to gain.
That's a far better reward than shooting fish in a barrel.
All the best,
John
