Wisdom Is The Fountain Of Youth
Many years ago, I was listening to a Bob Dylan song recorded by The Byrds called My Back Pages. It has a lyric I'd heard plenty of times but never really paid much attention to:
"Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now."
That line hit home with me.
Most people assume the older we get, the more set in our ways we become. And oftentimes that's true. But that lyric suggests something completely different.
What if wisdom actually makes us younger?
For many of us, wisdom is a late bloomer. It doesn't usually show up when we're convinced we've got life all figured out. It arrives later – quietly, without much fanfare.
Think about it. Who's more likely to be bullheaded? Who's more likely to think they know everything? Usually it's the young.
Most of us have gone through that "You can't tell me anything" stage.
If we never outgrow it, though, it simply changes costumes. It becomes, "I believe what I believe. Don't confuse me with the facts."
In other words, we started out old . . . and just kept getting older.
Unless we discover the real fountain of youth: wisdom.
Wisdom isn't just collecting more facts. It's seeing beyond them. It's recognizing there's always another perspective, another possibility, another lesson waiting to be learned.
Wisdom shows up the moment we stop pretending we know everything.
When our minds are packed full of "the way it is," there's no room to discover that maybe . . . it isn't.
That's why wisdom begins with a quiet mind.
Quiet creates space. And in that space, new insights have a chance to appear.
Wisdom takes us down a different road – one where we grow younger instead of older, and we're not so quick with our know-it-all tongue.
Maybe that's what Dylan meant all along.
The older we become in years, the younger we can become in spirit.
All the best,
John
