The Only Excuse That Works
It seems like making excuses has become a worldwide pastime.
I know because I've made more than my fair share of them over the years.
I was reminded of that today at the gym.
After my swim, I headed over to the exercise floor and overheard two guys talking about getting in shape. One of them clearly was. The other . . . not so much.
The heavier guy kept explaining why he wasn't more fit.
"I don't have enough time."
"It's my genes."
"Exercise just doesn't work for me."
"I can't control my appetite."
Then he looked at the fit guy and said, "I could never look like you."
The other fellow just nodded politely, but you could tell he'd stopped listening.
As I stood there, it struck me that none of those reasons were the real reason.
The only thing keeping him from becoming more fit was that he wasn't willing to do the same amount of work.
That's a hard truth because it doesn't just apply to fitness.
You may envy someone else's body, career, relationship, or success. But envy never changes your life. Emulation just might.
If you want what someone else has, it helps to study what they do . . . and then be willing to do some version of it yourself.
Most excuses sound convincing – to the person making them. But to everyone else, they're still excuses.
Maybe the only excuse that really works is this one:
"I'm just not willing."
It may not be flattering, but at least it's honest. And honesty is where change begins.
So here's my suggestion: put your excuses on pause. You might discover you’re far more capable than your excuses allow you to be.
All the best,
John
