Sad
About a year ago, The Grasshopper gave me a definition of sad . . . and, ironically, it made me sad.
He said, "Sad is when the people you care about the most don't care about you."
That's pretty hard to argue with.
In fact, if you've ever felt that way, you know just how gut-wrenching it can be.
It reminds me of an old song lyric: "I found love on a two-way street, but lost it on a lonely highway."
Those words paint a picture most of us recognize. At one time there was connection. Then somehow . . . there wasn't.
So what do you do when you still care about people who don't seem to have time for you?
I wish I had a simple answer.
What I do wonder, though, is how much of that sadness comes from what's actually happening . . . and how much comes from the story we're telling ourselves about what's happening.
People seem busier today than ever before.
Life pulls at them from every direction. Work. Family. Health. Financial worries. A hundred responsibilities you may never see from the outside.
Sometimes what feels like a lack of caring is simply a lack of time.
Now, if you're convinced someone truly no longer cares, I won't pretend that doesn't hurt.
It does.
And it's a heavy burden to carry.
The only thing I can offer is this:
Put your attention back on what brings you joy.
Spend less time feeding what's missing and more time nourishing what's present.
Because the more you care for yourself, the less power sadness has over you.
It doesn't erase the hurt.
But it does make room for something new to come through.
All the best,
John
