Passages

Back in 1976, Gail Sheehy wrote a groundbreaking book called Passages

It explored something we all experience but rarely talk about: the different seasons we move through in life.

I've been through enough of them to tell you this: it's one thing to read about a passage. It's another thing entirely to realize you're in the middle of one.

For a lot of men, there's a moment when they realize they've lost a step. Maybe it happens in their thirties. Maybe later. Unless you're Tom Brady or Roger Federer, sooner or later you notice you're not quite as invincible as you used to be.

For many women, there's often a passage – frequently somewhere between 35 and 50 – when life gets reevaluated.

Questions begin to surface: Is this all there is? Is this really the life I want?

Those are just two examples. The important thing isn't memorizing all the passages. It's recognizing when you're in one.

Pay attention to what's changing. Maybe it's your attitude. Maybe it's your priorities. Maybe it's your body reminding you that time is moving forward.

The moment you acknowledge the change, you stop arguing with reality. And when the argument ends, the transition becomes a whole lot easier.

Passages are part of being human. The sooner you recognize you're in one, the sooner acceptance can take its place.

And here's the beautiful part: once you stop denying you’re in one and stop resisting the passage, you stop getting in your own way.

All the best,

John
