Perception Isn't Reality

We've all heard the expression, "Perception is reality."

I don't buy it.

Perception is how we interpret reality. Those are two very different things.

Reality doesn't change because we have an opinion about it. It simply is.

Now, here's where it gets very interesting.

Most of us spend the majority of our lives living in our perceptions. We analyze, compare, justify, explain, and debate. It's an endless conversation going on inside our heads.

But there's another way of knowing.

It's called sensing.

Perception asks questions. Sensing gives answers.

Think about the last time you walked into a room. Before anyone said a word, didn't you already have a feel for the place?

You sensed whether something was comfortable or uncomfortable. . . . safe or unsafe . . . open or closed . . . OK, not OK.

That wasn't perception.

That was direct experience.

Sensing doesn't argue. It doesn't take sides. It simply reports what's there.

Perception, on the other hand, loves to add commentary.

It edits.

It embellishes.

It spins.

You could boil all of this down to, "Trust your gut." But I think it goes deeper than that.

It's about noticing when you've wandered into that endless internal debate. The moment you recognize it, you've stepped out of perception and into something much more reliable.

You've stepped into sensing.

Now, don't get me wrong. Perception has its place. We need it to interpret and navigate the world.

But it shouldn't be sitting at the head of the table.

When sensing leads and perception follows, life gets a whole lot clearer.

And that's when you stop confusing your interpretation with reality.

All the best,

John
