How To Escape Your Thinking

Have you ever noticed how your mind can get stuck on the same thought, circling it over and over like a dog chasing its tail?

That's when it's time for an interruption.

So how do you interrupt your thinking?

The first step is to notice it. Instead of getting swept up in your thoughts, watch them. Become an interested observer rather than a participant. Instead of being the actor on stage, take a seat in the audience.

The simple act of observing creates a little space. And in that space, something new has a chance to appear.

But there's another way to break the spell: use your imagination.

The moment you catch yourself caught up in some nagging thought, start imagining – anything.

It can be realistic, ridiculous, or completely impossible. It doesn't matter. The act of imagining shifts your mind onto a different track.

Picture yourself as a rodeo clown in Afghanistan. Imagine you're a billionaire trying to haggle with a street vendor over two dollars. Or picture yourself starring in a movie alongside your favorite actor.

The more outrageous, the better.

Those little flights of fancy loosen the grip of stale thinking. Suddenly your world isn't so black and white anymore.

You already have an imagination. You may as well use it.

It just might be the escape hatch you've been looking for.

All the best,

John
