Waiting Is A Head Game
"I hate waiting."
How many times have you said that? If you're anything like me, you've lost count.
For years I blamed my dislike of waiting on military basic training, where the unofficial motto seemed to be, "Hurry up and wait."
But over time I realized something.
Waiting isn't what stresses me out.
My thinking about waiting does.
You can be standing in line at the grocery store, sitting in a doctor's office, or waiting for someone to arrive. Physically, you're just standing or sitting there.
The stress comes from the conversation in your head.
"This is taking forever."
"I've got better things to do."
"Why can't they get organized?"
That's the part that wears you out.
It led me to redefine waiting.
Waiting is simply the time it takes.
Nothing more.
The time itself isn't the problem. It's the meaning we attach to it.
The moment we stop arguing with the fact that something is taking longer than we'd like, the experience changes.
You're no longer "waiting."
You're simply in a period of time that hasn't finished yet.
And that time doesn't have to be wasted.
You can observe what's around you, notice your breathing, think about something worthwhile, strike up a conversation, or simply enjoy not having to be somewhere else for a few minutes.
Now I don't think the word waiting is leaving our vocabulary anytime soon.
But if you redefine what it means, you may discover that what used to feel stressful becomes surprisingly peaceful.
Maybe waiting was never the problem.
Maybe the head game was.
All the best,
John
