Escape Your Addiction
Ya know, I think we all have habits we lean on. Some are harmless little quirks—like feeling the need to floss three times a day.
Others can do real damage.
This isn't a message about what causes addiction. It's about what often keeps it going.
Many addictions aren't just about chasing pleasure. They're about trying to get away from something that's happening inside your own mind.
When painful thoughts show up, they bring uncomfortable feelings with them. So we reach for something - food, alcohol, gambling, shopping, endless scrolling, porn – whatever gives us a little relief.
The addiction isn't just to the behavior. It's to escaping the thoughts.
Here's the challenge: you can't stop your mind from producing thoughts. It doesn't ask your permission before it serves them up.
So what can you do?
Notice them.
When a troubling thought appears, simply recognize it. Don't argue with it. Don't try to prove it wrong. And don't run from it.
Just notice that your mind is thinking.
That small act of observing creates a little space between you and the thought. And in that space, the thought begins to lose some of its grip.
The important part is making this a practice, not expecting it to be a one-time fix.
The more often you notice your thinking instead of automatically reacting to it, the less power those thoughts tend to have. And as they lose their grip, you may discover the addictive behavior starts losing its grip, too.
Hey, this isn't a cure for addiction, and it isn't a substitute for professional help. If you're struggling with addiction, please seek it.
But while a professional can help you change the behavior, you can begin changing your relationship with your thoughts.
And sometimes, that's where real recovery begins.
All the best,
John
