The Lesson of the Car Battery

Here's something I've wondered about.

Which side of your car battery is better – the positive terminal or the negative one?

The answer is . . . neither.

By themselves, neither one can start your car. But connect them together, and suddenly you've got enough power to get moving.

That got me thinking.

People often ask whether they should have more positive energy. But maybe that's the wrong question.

Because positive energy isn't always what a situation needs.

Sometimes it takes patience.

Sometimes urgency.

Sometimes compassion.

Sometimes firmness.

Sometimes you need to encourage someone. Other times you need to set a boundary.

It's not about deciding which energy is "good" and which one is "bad." It's about learning which combination fits the moment.

The trouble starts when we only know one way of responding.

If you're always agreeable, eventually you need some assertiveness.

If you're always forceful, maybe it's time for some gentleness.

When we're locked into one habitual pattern, we lose flexibility. And when we lose flexibility, we lose momentum.

So here's a question I've found helpful:

"What energy would serve this situation best?"

Then don't rush to answer it intellectually.

Just ask the question . . . and notice what shows up.

At first, that feels a little uncomfortable. It feels like you're working without a safety net because you're not relying on your usual conditioned response.

But something interesting begins to happen.

You start trusting yourself.

You discover that you already have access to far more responses than you thought.Your intellect is valuable, but it isn't always the best tool for choosing how to be.

That's something your deeper awareness often knows before your thinking mind catches up.

So the next time you're facing a difficult situation, don't ask whether you should be more positive or less negative.

Ask:

"What energy would serve this moment best?"

And just like a balanced battery isn't one sided. Maybe that's true of us, too."

All the best,

John
