The SECRET To Making A Connection

It’s no secret that attention is the secret to making a connection.

I’ve talked about this many times before. Maybe not enough times for it to really hit home.

So let me give it another go.

When you give another person your attention, something happens almost immediately. You begin to connect.

Make eye contact, and they know you see them.

Nod while they’re talking. Give them a smile or a little facial expression that says, I’m with you. They know you’re listening.

Even the way you position your body can communicate that you’re engaged with them.

But when you don’t give someone your full attention, the opposite happens.

You disconnect.

And they feel it.

Try this one on yourself.

Imagine you’re standing in the checkout line at the supermarket. The cashier is scanning your groceries, but barely acknowledges you. Instead, they’re carrying on a personal conversation with the bagger about everything except the job they’re supposed to be doing.

How does that make you feel?

You don’t even know this person, but you might still walk away feeling invisible.

Like you don’t matter.

That’s because, if connection is the objective, the other person has to feel acknowledged.

And there’s one more important piece to this.

You can do everything I’ve just suggested – make eye contact, nod, smile – and still not be connected if you’re inside your own head having a conversation with yourself.

That’s a connection killer.

The other person can sense that you’re physically there, but mentally somewhere else . . . even when you’re on the phone with them.

And that creates a disconnect.

The good news is, you can connect with more than one person at a time.

If you’re in a small gathering or speaking to a large group, look around. Let your attention move from one person to another.

Just remember: don’t disappear into your own head while you’re doing it.

As long as you’re genuinely giving your attention, people will feel it.

Want to make another person feel like they’re the only one in the room?

Give them your attention.

It’s one of the simplest – and most powerful – ways to create a connection.

All the best,
John
