It’s Never Too Early To Prevent Being Late
We don’t need a psychic to predict our future.
Sometimes all we have to do is look at our past.
Because if we keep doing what we’ve always done, there’s a pretty good chance we’re headed toward what we’ve always gotten.
That’s why Ben Franklin’s old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” has stuck around for so long.
Prevention is about getting there early – before the problem has a chance to become a problem.
So take a look at how you got to where you are.
What were the steps?
What choices did you make?
What patterns did you repeat?
And resist the temptation to blame someone else. Blaming keeps your attention on the past when what you really need to be noticing is what you’re doing right now.
Because “early” doesn’t necessarily mean catching something days or weeks in advance.
Sometimes early means catching yourself in the act.
You notice that you’re taking a step you’ve taken before. You recognize the behavior that has lead you down the same unproductive road.
And that moment of recognition can be enough to interrupt the pattern.
You suddenly realize, Hey, wait a minute. I know where this goes.
That’s the value of noticing.
Patterns are made up of repeated steps. And if you keep taking the same steps, you’ll keep arriving at the same place.
But when you see the pattern while it’s happening, you have an opportunity to step out of it.
You don’t have to finish the journey just because you’ve started down the same road.
That awareness is what makes change happen.
Not hoping for a different outcome. Simply noticing and interrupting the steps that have always produced the outcome you’re attempting to change.
Want a different future?
Then get an early start.
Start noticing the patterns that have created your past – and interrupt them before they create more of it.
Then the only thing you’ll be late for . . .
is getting stuck again.
All the best,
John
