Rob and his friends stop in North Carolina for some wiffles.
Hi, I'm Rob Tale number sixty-four. Withle house. I was driving from Georgia to North Carolina to hike with some friends. There were three of us in the car, and we got hungry, so we decided to stop to eat. We were in a small town just over the North Carolina border, and the only place we could find was a waffle house. We went inside and sat down, we ordered our food, and my friend ordered a waffle. Our server put the order in, and as she did, she called out to the cook to put one wiffle down, and then the cook proceeded to make a waffle in the waffle iron. And then when it was finished, he said, Whiffle up. My friends and I gave each other confused looks because at this waffle house they called waffles wiffles. At first we thought it was just a joke, maybe they just did it this one time. But we saw several other people order waffles and in every instance where the average person would say waffle, the employees of this waffle house said wiffle. One of my friends, who's braver than I, asked our server, why do you call them wiffles? And the server said, That's just how it is at this location. I'm not sure how it started, but everyone at this waffle house says wiffle instead of waffle. We ate our food, it was delicious. And then I didn't really think about it much after that day. I did tell the story to a few people about how we went to a waffle house where they called waffles wiffles, but life kept going, and a couple years went by. And then me and one of the friends that had been at that waffle house that day were driving to North Carolina again, and we decided to stop at that waffle house. We went inside, we ordered our food, my friend ordered a waffle again, and this time the server, when they called out the order to the cook, they said, One waffle down. When the waffle was ready, the cook said, Waffle up. We saw another person order a waffle, and the cook and the server called it a waffle. Two years after our initial visit, nobody was calling waffles wiffles at this waffle house. My friend, again, who is braver than I, said to our server, Hey, when we were in here a couple years ago, everyone called waffles wiffles. The server gave us a confused look, and my friend tried to explain again. Instead of saying the word waffle, they would say wiffle. Like if I ordered a waffle from you, you would say to the cook, Wiffle down. The server was still confused. She didn't really have much time for our nonsense. And who could blame her? She said, I've worked here ten years, and nobody's ever called waffles wiffles at this waffle house. You must have the wrong place. And so we're not really sure why they called waffles wiffles that day. Maybe they were just having fun at work and messing with everybody. Which is a great thing. Or maybe there's some other explanation that I can't think of. All I know is even years later, whenever I see a waffle, I really want to call it a wiffle. Our theme music is by Mitchell Hardidge.
