Rob Tells Tales

RTT Mailbag 3

Rob Tiffin Season 4 Episode 21

Let's get back into the mailbag. And one more tale about Downtime.

Rob:

Welcome to the third edition of the Rob Tells Tales mailbag. Before we get started, this is the final episode of season four. We did 20 new episodes, and I'm not sure how long it'll be until season five. I already have a lot of episode ideas, so hopefully sooner rather than later. Last week, I activated a feature that my podcast host offers called FanMail, and now in the show notes of every episode, there's a link you can click, and if you're on your mobile phone, it allows you to send a text message to the show. A few people have sent messages. It's been pretty fun so far, but if you want to do that, we'd love to hear from you. Feel free to ask a question for the mailbag. And the way it works, just so you know, is I will get the message, but I cannot respond to the message. It doesn't give me your phone number, and it does not sign you up to be on a list or anything like that. All that happens is you send the message and then you're done. And the first question I'm going to answer today actually came in by way of a text message that someone sent. This is from Candice and their question is, do you have a Patreon or is there anything else we can do to help the podcast? I do not have a Patreon. Maybe one day, but it doesn't really make sense at the moment. And there are a few ways you can help. I think the best way would be just to share your favorite episode with a friend, or several friends. Another thing would be just to share that favorite episode on your social media accounts. And then you can rate and review it on Apple Podcasts or whatever app you use. I'm not sure how helpful that is as far as getting new listeners, but I do think it helps when people check out the podcast for the first time, and it has positive ratings and reviews. And several people have already rated and reviewed it, and I really appreciate it. Thank you. Question number two comes from Grant in Vallejo, California. Rob, I'm happy Where did you go? Also, do you ever worry that you'll run out of tails to tell? Yeah, I took a long break from making the podcast, but I'm doing it again now. I'll probably take another long break after this season. It takes me a while to record the episodes, and I have a job and things like that. But I like doing it, so I hope to keep doing it for as long as I can. I do worry that I'll run out of tails, but I haven't so far, and I'm still living my life. So hopefully that won't happen. The final question is from Madison, and they worked a little bit on Downtime. You mentioned an actor named Garrett in the Downtime episodes. I don't remember that character or that actor being in the movie. Is there a story that you're comfortable telling behind that? Yes, there is. The reason you don't remember it, Madison, is because this all happened before you signed on to help out. But it's still an interesting tale, so here we go. Tale number 65, The Poker Game. Larry arrived in town for downtime, and we just wanted to shoot something that was kind of simple, where everyone could get familiar working together and working with Larry. We came up with this idea of a scene where everyone played poker together, and it was supposed to be this easy thing. It was going to be Will, Larry's character Vince, Adam, Robert's character Dave, Garrett, and we also put some people in that were on the crew. They were all sitting around this big table playing poker, and Garrett was playing this this young rich guy that was at the golf course. He was sort of the opposite of Larry's character, Vince. It ended up being really difficult to shoot this scene because it was so many people. It was night. We shot it outside on the back porch, so we had to light it. We had multiple cameras going, multiple microphones. Technically, it was probably the hardest thing we shot in the whole movie, and that was never the intent. But this actor, Garrett, that's not his real name, he and Larry were acting in this scene, and Larry was sort of antagonizing him. That's what we wanted. again they're enemies and they're playing poker so Larry kept accusing him of cheating and when he did it they would go back and forth at each other arguing and Garrett started saying he wasn't a cheater I will not sit here and let you disrespect me like that and it was working really well for the scene but then when we cut him and Larry kept arguing and then we'd start shooting again they'd get back into it And then we cut. And they were still going at each other. And Garrett seemed really offended that Larry was accusing him of cheating. And it was very confusing. It was almost like the movie had become reality. But I assumed it was just sort of a side effect of acting in the scene together. But that was not the case. When we finally finished shooting that night, Garrett asked to speak to me alone and told me that he did not want to come back and be in the movie anymore. And I said okay. With Garrett gone, that scene no longer made sense in the movie, so I cut it out. It's hard to understand what exactly went wrong. Maybe it's a testament to Larry's acting ability. When he was staring down Garrett, calling him a cheater, it was so real that Garrett had to take it personally. Okay, thanks for writing in, Madison, Grant, and Candace. That concludes Season 4 of Rob Tells Tales. Hope to be back soon. Thanks again. Rob Tells Tales is produced by me, Rob Tiffin. The cover art is by Marcella Johnson.
