Speaker 1:

Philanthropy Today is brought to you by the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation. In this episode we feature a recently broadcast segment of the GMCF Community Hour, as heard on NewsRadio KMAN. We are back the GMCF Community Hour here on NewsRadio KMAN. I'm Dave Lewis and joining us in the studio here in Colony Square. Christina Nolte is here with Good Shepherd, home Care and Hospice. Hello, hello, how are you Good?

Speaker 2:

Shepherd Home Care and Hospice. Hello, hello, how are you?

Speaker 1:

I am great and getting better.

Speaker 2:

Well, that's a good answer.

Speaker 1:

I mean, I get to come in here and I get to talk with great people doing great things.

Speaker 2:

It's a pretty good gig you've got, and then there's Vern. Well, you know, with the good comes the bad. Sometimes we've got to take it all. I don't know anybody. I get more uh, uh, heck to go. I don't think he'd have it any other way. I don't think he would. I think he thrives on it, Doesn't he? Maybe a little bit.

Speaker 1:

Maybe. Yeah Well, this is a big week obviously for all the nonprofits, but you also at a home care hospice have a big event this week. It's one of your key fundraisers.

Speaker 2:

Yes, this Thursday we have the 19th annual Promenade on Points happening, a very popular and fun event that allows our participants to stroll around downtown Manhattan and pop into the participating businesses. We have nine this year Nine businesses who will open their doors to our guests, and people get to go into each business, check out what they've got going on and then also sample some fabulous food and drink.

Speaker 1:

Okay, nine businesses. Nine businesses, how much time do we have altogether, you have two and a half hours. I will tell you from past experience I don't think that's enough.

Speaker 2:

I know, because if you go and chat too much in every place you run out of that would never happen to me. I'm not necessarily, you know, insinuating that was your challenge on the path, but you would never. I would never. But you know, for those folks that I have observed who are so social and enjoy chatting, yes, the time goes very quickly.

Speaker 1:

That's one of the great things is, just like you know, there are so many fundraisers that you know it is largely a social event.

Speaker 2:

Yes, because you really do just get to stroll around. Obviously it's a great date night out. It's a great gals night out. It's a great. You know those groups of couples who like to get together and do fun activities, and so you show up with whoever you're with and then you run into all kinds of people Maybe some people you see all the time, people you haven't seen in forever and you're getting to walk into businesses that maybe you frequent regularly and other businesses you maybe have never had the opportunity to go into. So I love that kind of dynamic and format of the promenade. It's flexible and it's fun and it's casual and just a great night out around downtown Manhattan.

Speaker 1:

And it's always a great time of year to be doing that. It's nice also that it ties in the prom theme with what's happening with Manhattan High this weekend as well. Yes, so you got nine different locations. Can you spout them out for us? Oh gosh, oh, you don't have the list.

Speaker 2:

I don't have the list that would have been thoughtful and prepared.

Speaker 1:

You did bring an assistant along with you. I did?

Speaker 2:

I'll tell you who I know that we have. We have J&Z Imaging, right, we've got Manhatchet, ah, okay, we've got the Boutique. We've got G Thomas Jewelers Yep, we've got Gaia. We've got yeah, I'm going to have to Fragrant Blends, candle Bar, s&w Gallery and Frames, brown Shoe Fit and Wildflower Trading Co.

Speaker 1:

So those are our nine. Okay, is there like a little passport?

Speaker 2:

There is. When our guests check in, they will get a tasting glass, a tasting plate and the promenade map, and so the map signifies who these nine businesses are, where they're located and then what food and beverages they're serving. Some of our businesses are serving wine, some are serving cocktail, and a couple are even serving beers.

Speaker 1:

They have a little theme to what they like to do, don't they?

Speaker 2:

Yes, we do, and so every business gets to choose whether they're featuring the wine, the cocktail or the beer selection, and then we've got some great appetizers that go along with each of those selections. So yeah, really a fun sampling of different beverages, different food and then again the atmosphere of these nine wonderful businesses, mm-hmm.

Speaker 1:

Okay, anything that I should plan for in the endeavor.

Speaker 2:

You know what New check-in location this year? So for the 19th year, this is kind of the one new element we are checking in at Union Hall. Oh, great yeah wonderful venue that's allowing us to host our check-in there. So everybody comes to Union Hall, checks in, gets their items and then can head in any direction they want to and spend the next couple of hours checking out what these businesses have to offer.

Speaker 1:

And for what our listeners benefit. If you're not familiar with Union Hall, it is a new event space and it's right next there to SNW Galleries, and what Cale and Beck have done with that facility is just beautiful. It is a beautiful facility They've preserved a lot of the history, like they typically do, so it's just that that's going to be a neat thing for you, a good starting point.

Speaker 2:

We're excited about it. Yeah, it makes sure the check-in is out of it. It seems like we got a lot of breezy nights on the promenade path.

Speaker 1:

It's April in Kansas I know, I know.

Speaker 2:

So it keeps us out of the wind. Our maps won't be flying all over the place. So we sure appreciate their partnership for that check-in. Okay, do you still have tickets available in at 785-537-0688 and get tickets? Or if you know, you never know how your week's going to go and Thursday comes and you just want to stroll up to the check-in and buy your tickets that night. They can do that also.

Speaker 1:

Okay, anything else about Promenade on Points.

Speaker 2:

No, we're just excited. We're looking forward to it.

Speaker 1:

How many years you been doing this 19th annual Wow. You know when you started this. You know your offices were downtown.

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes, we were part of the downtown Manhattan community, so that's something we've loved about. Continuing the promenade is when we relocated and opened up the Good Shepherd Hospice House. It still allowed us to continue those relationship and partnerships with some of these folks who were our neighbors, and so we still get to work with them on this event every year. That's another element of the promenade that we just love.

Speaker 1:

Okay, Tomorrow's a big day too.

Speaker 2:

Tomorrow's a big day too. I know Vern was already on talking all about Grow Green.

Speaker 1:

We're excited. We've been talking about it since like January, that's true?

Speaker 2:

Well, it's a big day, Well it's a big day.

Speaker 1:

We're super excited about it. It's Christmas.

Speaker 2:

It is.

Speaker 1:

It's our non-profit Christmas and I know you've been down here in Colony Square when we have this and it really is just a fun place to hang out.

Speaker 2:

It is. It's a fun day and you get to see people strolling in who are excited about coming and participating. You see all the wonderful volunteers who make Grow Green happen. You know, as a nonprofit leader, I get to connect with other nonprofit team members and see them and check in with them. So all elements of Grow Green really it's just such a fun day to get to participate in.

Speaker 1:

Now I know a number of the nonprofits utilize the funds that they raise on Grow Green Match Day for a particular effort. Does that apply to you?

Speaker 2:

Well, our particular effort is really kind of our ongoing effort. It really is just to support the fact that we are the only local nonprofit hospice provider in the community, and so we have our proud tradition of caring for all, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. So the funds that we raise at Grow Green go directly back to our patient care and support the care that we provide, again, to all of those individuals who maybe are underinsured or uninsured and need access to quality end-of-life care. And so events like Grow Green, like our promenade, all of those funds raised, allow us to be able to say yes to all of those people and not worry about the financial component or concerns.

Speaker 1:

That is I know from from a friend. That is a huge relief. You know, you don't, you know, I think, everything you know, when, when you're associated with anything that you know, in those last days especially, or any kind of medical situation, it ain't cheap. And you know that cost factor is something that is just. It creates a lot of anxiety for people.

Speaker 2:

A tremendous amount of anxiety and stress. And when we are dealing with clients and families who are in the final chapter of their life, we don't want their primary focus and stress and concern to be about finances. We want them to be able to be free to spend time with their loved one, to really focus on those final moments, those final memories, and we don't want that financial piece to be what steals that time away because they're so busy being concerned about that. And what if mom doesn't have any resources? And how can we get care for mom if she doesn't have the ability to pay? So we're very proud to be able to go, you know, let's push all of that to the side. Let's focus on good quality care of your loved one and not focus on what they do or do not have in their bank account, just like for anyone who has been a survivor of a surviving spouse or child or whatever parent, sometimes grandparent.

Speaker 1:

you know it is just such a safe place when you're there because you, just you, know, you, you, you understand fully what the purpose is, what the need is and what, what your, what your goals are really in. You know, for not just that, who is? Do you call them patient?

Speaker 2:

We refer to ours as clients.

Speaker 1:

Clients and and and their families and friends, and it just is. I mean, it's just, that's a great comfort.

Speaker 2:

Well, I so appreciate hearing that, because that's exactly what we've designed the hospice house to be. That's our goal for CARES every day is that people can feel like they come to us and kind of, let us take some of the burden Again. It's a very emotional time. It's a very heart-wrenching time anytime you're preparing to say goodbye to someone you love. So any of that stress and worry and burden that we can take away, that we can take on and allow families to just be families and to again create those moments and memories, that's what's going to live on.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I think one of the things that I appreciate most is you know you had the send off for those that have served.

Speaker 2:

Yes, our veterans. We have a wonderful program called our Vet to Vet Volunteer Program in which we train veterans in the community to then serve as volunteers for our veteran hospice clients. And part of that is a we honor veterans pinning ceremony. It is a beautiful ceremony in which it is kind of a final salute to those who have served. It's very meaningful for our veteran volunteers, for the families and friends of that veteran, but such a beautiful just again creating a moment of celebration for those veterans who are at the end of their life.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, well, we got a lot going on this week. Good luck with Thursday.

Speaker 2:

You may be prepared to have an umbrella, because there is a chance of some showers or maybe some thunderstorms, and that the event will still go on. It will absolutely go on All the stops are inside. Yes, sir.

Speaker 1:

So you know that's always, you know, something to take into consideration. Wouldn't be the first time that you've had some rain, Would not be the first time, and it still goes away.

Speaker 2:

The promenade has seen a few rainy years, but you know we so appreciate everybody who comes out looking forward to just having a great time, literally rain or shine, and so, yeah, we've never let that slow us down.

Speaker 1:

Well, I know it's a big day for you tomorrow. Good luck with Grow Gray Match Day. Thank you, we appreciate that, and good luck with Promenade on Points. Well, thank you again. Goodshepherdhhorg is where you can get your tickets, if you have not done so already, for Promenade on Points. Christine Anolte joining us. She's the executive director of Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice. Have a great week, man. What a great week it is for you.

Speaker 2:

It's an exciting week. I think we're going to have a wonderful week.
