Sponsor Intro And Warm Welcome
SPEAKER_01Philanthropy Today is brought to you by the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation. In this episode, we feature a recently broadcast segment of the GMCF Community Hour, as heard on News Radio KMAN. We are back with the GMCF Community Hour here on News Radio KMAN. Christina Nolte is joining us. She is the executive director at Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice. And I just saw you a couple of weeks ago when you spoke at Ronnie Grice's retirement.
SPEAKER_00Such a neat ceremony. That was such a neat special thing to be a part of. I was so honored to even get to say a few words. I mean, again, who doesn't love clearly by the packed house? Oh my god. It's very clear who doesn't love Ronnie Grice.
SPEAKER_01It was a little warm.
SPEAKER_00I said we were all just so warmly moved by our sentiments for Ronnie that we really uh heated up that room.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. But anyway, I I just uh want to make a comment. Appreciate your comments. You echoed uh a lot of what a lot of people think about uh Chief Christ.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if he's back from Arkansas from his fishing trip or not, but uh pray for Cheryl.
SPEAKER_00We've got him on the hook next week and a volunteer gig for one of our events. So I you see how see what I did there. I did. Well played. Yeah, he will be back in town next week. I can tell you that for sure.
SPEAKER_01So you said one of your events.
Promenade On Points Turns 20
SPEAKER_00Yes. We've got Do you have more than one? Well, we obviously get to participate in Grow Green Match Day next week. Oh, there's that, yes. There is that. That's a pretty big day for all of us. But then we are hosting an event next Thursday, and it will be the 20th anniversary of our promenade on points.
SPEAKER_0120 years.
SPEAKER_0020 years we've been doing that. I know that's hard to believe. The years I've been doing.
SPEAKER_01I remember when you started that. I'm like going, hey, this is a cool idea.
SPEAKER_00I remember when we started that.
SPEAKER_01I've I've been to a number of them. Um, I often run into conflicts, but um, you know, my now wife and I had an early date to that a couple of years ago. Yes. And it's such a fun thing for anybody and everybody, you know, whether it be couples or friends groups, whatever. You just got downtown just livens up when you have promenade.
SPEAKER_00It's such a fun event. And, you know, that event was founded by Standard Beverage, who's one of our wonderful partners. They sponsor all of the beverage selections that are featured that night. And they have these events in other communities. They they have one in Lawrence called the Mass Street Mosey, and Wichita, it's called the Old Town Walkabout. And so 20 plus years ago, they said, we think this could really go over well in Manhattan and Points Avenue is such a cool um street with such cool businesses. And look obviously how downtown has grown and flourished over these 20 years. Um, but they were right in kind of identifying that this could be a really cool event for the community, obviously a wonderful fundraising event for Good Shepherd. And 20 years later, it's still going strong and still so many people's favorite events. We hear that every year that whether it's a couple's night out or a gal's night out, or you know, four couples who get together every year, people mark this as their to-do event um every year.
SPEAKER_01With the the other events that you mentioned, is alliteration required?
SPEAKER_00It can go either event. No, promenade, promenade. We've had this debate over the years. I think either one were particular one.
How The Night Works Downtown
SPEAKER_01You know, okay. All right, okay. So, what do people need to do in order to get uh to participate?
SPEAKER_00All they have to do is buy a ticket and show up. We take care of the rest. We like to make it simple. We try to keep it really easy. And uh, you just get a ticket, you show up. And if you have for some reason missed the last 19 years of the promenade, um, what the promenade is, is we've got downtown businesses who open their doors for the evening. They serve as our hosts, and each business features a beverage selection, um, either a wine or a cocktail, and matching appetizers. And so our guests get to literally just stroll up and down Points Avenue for the evening, um, maybe go into some of their businesses, maybe go into businesses that they've never had the chance to go in and check out before. And they do it all uh to support Good Shepherd. And it's a wonderful way to partner with our downtown business community. Um, Good Shepherd used to be a member of the downtown business community. We used to be located on the 300 block of points. And so it's a way for us to still stay engaged with our former neighbors and again support downtown while also supporting Good Shepherd.
SPEAKER_01You know, one of the things that I will guarantee you, you will see friends. Another thing is you will make new friends.
FAQs Drinks Glass And Weather
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. You're you're strolling around downtown. Uh, yes, you're going with your friends or you're seeing people you work with or seeing people you haven't worked with in a while. Um, but then you hop in a business when another group comes into business, and while you're waiting in line for your drink and your food, you start conversations. And sometimes we see people then kind of grouping up and strolling around the street together. It really is just a very fun, laid-back atmosphere.
SPEAKER_01Speaking of strolling around the street, can they take their drinks out? Is that part of the because you know the laws have changed here, but is that apply to what your events are.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't apply to our event just because not every one of the businesses. It's a take a bit of events. Yep. So can't do that.
SPEAKER_01Um but wanted to clarify that.
SPEAKER_00Yes, thanks for clarifying. I'm sure we'll get some of those questions asked that night as well. So yeah, we'll have to finish your beverage in the store before you walk to the next, but I don't know that anybody's not been able to rise to that challenge the past 19 years. You do get a keepsake glass, 20th anniversary glass this year. So I mean, I know, I know.
SPEAKER_01If you have any leftovers, I need to add more. All right, I'll see what I can do. I'll see what you can do. You know, I can't remember when it was. It's been a few years, but it was raining.
SPEAKER_00Bring around an umbrella and yes, that has happened a couple of times, probably only two times in our in our past history.
SPEAKER_01So I was looking at the 10-day forecast. It doesn't go that far, but it should be nice and in the 70s.
SPEAKER_00That's what we're hoping. We're hoping it'll be a beautiful spring evening and everybody'll just have a great time.
SPEAKER_01And you got a great week planned for next week.
SPEAKER_00I know it's gonna be a fun week. We're gonna get engaged with a lot of our great supporters and donors and celebrate. And yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_01All right. Where do where do we get the tickets?
Trivia Contest And Ticket Giveaway
SPEAKER_00We get the tickets um online so they can go to our website, which is goodshepherdh.org, um, or on our Facebook page or Instagram page, GoodShepherdH, Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice. Click the link right there. And we currently have a trivia question that is live on our social media.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um, and I'm gonna toss this trivia question to you to see if you want to make a guess. It's a promenade history. It's promenade history, trivia history.
SPEAKER_01Promenade history.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so here's the question. This longtime promenade partner started out as a venue. So they were once a host that people came in and enjoyed drink and food and has grown into a valued sponsor, supporting the event for 18 of the past 20 years. So they have been a participant. 18.
SPEAKER_01When you say venue, define venue.
SPEAKER_00The years they were a venue, they were one of the stops. Like we walked into their business. One of the businesses.
SPEAKER_01Yes. I'm gonna say JC Imaging.
SPEAKER_00J and C imaging. Okay, we're gonna log that as your guests.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I can't tell you if you're right or wrong. It's still live on social media. You gotta wait. You gotta wait to find out.
SPEAKER_01Okay, fine.
SPEAKER_00And if anybody else has heard this and wants to pop on and make their guess, go to our Facebook page, make the guess you can get entered into uh to win two tickets to the event.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00So J and C imaging is Dave's official guess. Got it. It's my guess. Okay, I'm putting it down.
SPEAKER_01When are you going to let me know?
SPEAKER_00Uh Tuesday.
SPEAKER_01Tuesday. Yeah. Tomorrow or next Tuesday or the Tuesday after.
SPEAKER_00It's either tomorrow or next Tuesday.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I'm not sure which Tuesday.
SPEAKER_01So you got a new campaign, I understand.
Building An Endowment For Hospice
SPEAKER_00We also have a new campaign going on. We just officially kind of uh announced this, made this public at the end of March. We've been working hard kind of quietly behind the scenes, but we have um been working on an endowment campaign for some more um, you know, kind of long-term, long-range goals, uh, long-term support of our charitable mission, and also just some um sustainability for our hospice house itself. You know, this is kind of, we see the hospice house as a beloved community-raised, community-supported facility. And so the endowment campaign will be something that provides some support to that uh, you know, in perpetuity into the future. And so started working on this, had an initial$5 million campaign goal, and we have just surpassed 4.4 million raised toward that goal.
SPEAKER_01Great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we are we are very excited, very um touched by the support, continued support of the community. You know, our community has always really been such a wonderful um advocate of Good Shepherd and of our mission at events like the promenade and the festival, but for them to engage in this endowment campaign as well has been really just remarkable.
Grow Green Match Day And Mission
SPEAKER_01All right. So we talk about things that involve money. Money's involved, a big part of any nonprofit, obviously. It is. And we are what is today, 13th? Nine days away from Grow Green Match Day. What's that mean to you?
SPEAKER_00Grow Green is such a significant day for Good Shepherd, um, because it does just allow us, just as one of many participating nonprofits, to have that space to just share our mission with the community for our longtime supporting donors or for maybe who donors who are popping on the Grow Green Match Day website and reading a little bit about, and maybe they haven't ever uh supported Good Shepherd or have never engaged with us as a client or family. And so we'd love just having that awareness opportunity that Grow Green provides, um, just to be able to share our mission with the community and make sure that everyone's aware. We are the only local nonprofit provider of hospice, palliative home care and um home health services, and that we do provide care to all, regardless of insurance status, regardless of ability to pay. And um we've had that tradition here in the community for over 45 years now. And so that's just um, you know, will always be our focus and our mission, making sure everyone has that same access to compassionate end-of-life care.
SPEAKER_01What have you learned over the years and how is it applied to the things that you do on Grow Green Match Day to connect with people?
SPEAKER_00You know, what I've learned over the years, the thing that's unique about Good Shepherd is we may be someone that anyone could need in the future. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, anyone, non-discriminatory, regardless of age.
SPEAKER_00I mean, yeah, we we've cared for um infants all the way through 105. I haven't thought about infants. Yeah. And so when you think about Good Shepherd, we truly are an organization here in the community that can be needed by any individual, any family at any point in their life. And so that's a pretty remarkable statement to be able to make, uh, a pretty broad connection to be able to have to the community. And I think it's why we've been fortunate to be here in the community for so long, because we have been called on to care for so many people and to touch so many people's lives um through our care. And and that's pretty special to be able to say we're truly here for everyone. Um, and whenever that need comes in your life, whenever you might have that need for our services, we're gonna be here for you to be able to reach out to and um then we can begin that that care and support.
Hospice Referrals Made Simple
SPEAKER_01I understand it's a very simple process in order to have someone come into the facility.
SPEAKER_00It really is. That's something a lot of people are surprised about. A referral to hospice care is a lot simpler than most people might think. Um, to be eligible to receive hospice care, whether it's at the hospice house or in a home setting, um, you have to have a referral from a physician. You have to have your physician who says, you know, I believe, in my best estimate, if this disease continues on the path it's on now, I think we're looking at the last chapter of this individual's life. And so it's that statement, that referral from a physician that makes someone eligible to receive hospice care. But that conversation can start just with a phone call to us or a conversation with your doctor or a family member saying, hey, I'm gonna reach out and see if maybe it's time for this level of care. So it can start really pretty simply and pretty easily. Um, and and that's the thing we want people to know. Don't go without care and support just because you're uncertain if you're eligible, you're uncertain if it's the right time. Just reach out and we can start that conversation.
SPEAKER_01Good Shepherd H H.org.
SPEAKER_00Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_01It's a great place to start. Christina, always a pleasure to have you in on the show.
SPEAKER_00Good luck next week.
SPEAKER_01You got two biggies next week.
SPEAKER_00We do. It's gonna be a big week.
SPEAKER_01Are we gonna be downstairs?
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, we're gonna, we always love to pop in, just see the activity. And yeah, it's such a fun day, not only to watch it online and watch the progress online, but then to come in and engage with um, you know, GMCF staff and their trustees and volunteers who help run the day, and then just your donors and other nonprofits. It's such a great day.
SPEAKER_01You know, one of the things, and it it it it goes unsaid, but I know it's felt. It makes you feel good about the work you're doing when you see those contributions come in. And it's got to be really reassuring.
SPEAKER_00It really is because it's such a tangible day. It's not that we don't see that appreciation or that thanks or that recognition throughout the year, but Grow Green really lends itself to being one tangible, remarkable 24 hours in which people take that thanks and appreciation and translate it into philanthropic giving.
SPEAKER_01Appreciate what you all do and you and your staff. And I know you got volunteers. A lot of people go into bat for for the work you're doing at Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. We sure appreciate it.
Closing Thanks And Next Guest
