I sat down with a friend Maggie who was ready to share her story after hearing the episode on body shaming. Maggie describes herself as “Just a mom in her mid thirties living with a rare disease. “ Maggie lives with a rare disease called Achalasia. Maggie shares the years of not knowing what was happening to her body and the responses she received from others once she was diagnosed with a rare disease, Achalasia.
In this episode we cover not only her health scare of thinking she was dying, but how others, men and women responded to her face and behind her back.
Maggie drops key points in this episode of how we as women talk behind closed doors and each other’s backs, and not confront our friends when we have concerns about them. Maggie discusses being her lowest weight and at her highest weight which opens the door of body shaming, asking for help, and reaching out to someone you love and asking if they are okay. I also add my own reservations of asking her if she was okay when I was face to face with her years ago. I made her weight loss about me and experienced fear of asking if she was okay.
