Seek Things Above
The mission of the Mount Angel Institute is to share the rich ways of Mount Angel Abbey’s Benedictine monastic life with Church and World. In this podcast, we share talks from monks, faculty, and guest speakers at Mount Angel that generally focus on the rich ways of prayer, community life, deep reading or lectio divina, life centered on the Eucharist, Benedictine hospitality, arts and culture, and caring for the land and environment.
Mount Angel Abbey (Saint Benedict, Oregon) is a community of Benedictine monks founded in 1882 from the Abbey of Engelberg in Switzerland. Today, the community continues to serve the spiritual needs of western Oregon and beyond through the parish church of St. Mary’s, a seminary (founded in 1889), a guesthouse, and other works that welcome all visitors and guests in the spirit of Benedictine hospitality.

Eucharistic Transformation: Desire, Liturgy, and Purification with Br. Anselm Flores, OSB
What is the greatest Eucharistic miracle? More than what we commonly know as “Eucharistic miracles,” the greatest miracle is that we are transformed into what the Eucharist signifies: the true presence of God. But how does this come about and where is the place where this transformation occurs? This presentation will examine the key notion of desire – often misunderstood in contemporary society – and its transformation and purification within the liturgy, the place and the means by which we “put on Christ” and become what we were destined to be.
Br. Anselm Flores, OSB, is a monk of Mount Angel Abbey and the coordinator of the Mount Angel Institute. He presented this final talk in the fall 2024 Christian in the World lecture series at Mount Angel Abbey on December 14, 2024.
The Christian in the World lecture series, sponsored by Mount Angel Institute, is an integrated program of study, prayer and discussion for Christians who want to live their faith more deeply. The program seeks to help participants gain a more profound understanding of the Scriptures and the Church, and to support lay people in exploring how to live their baptismal vocation in everyday life.
